Top-performing
Healthcare Organizations Recognized at McKessons Annual
CPOE Competition
Peninsula
Regional Medical Center, a 358-bed hospital in Salisbury,
Md., recently earned top honors in McKessons third annual
Celebrating CPOE Success Award competition for reducing
errors related to high-risk medications. Peninsula Regional was
recognized for its use of McKessons Horizon
Expert Orders computerized physician order entry
(CPOE) solution to support patient safety improvements across
its entire organization. The focus of our CPOE initiative
has always been patient safety, says Chris Snyder, D.O.,
chief medical informatics officer, Peninsula Regional. As
our CPOE adoption levels have increased, weve been able
to make process changes and better use of information to enhance
the quality of care we deliver.
Concord
Hospital (N.H.), a 230-bed regional medical center, was named
an award finalist for using CPOE to help caregivers improve and
standardize inpatient diabetes management. With the right information
readily available to clinicians, Concord a two-time CPOE
award winner reduced variation in care delivery that is
expected to lead to better patient outcomes. An independent panel
of industry experts selected the winners based on their use of
CPOE to enhance clinical and financial results. Read the press
release.
OakBend
Medical Center Gains Clinical and Financial Success with McKessons
Paragon Electronic Health Record Solution
With the implementation of McKessons Paragon®
hospital
information system (HIS), OakBend Medical Center
in Richmond, Texas, has reached 100% adoption by its nurses and
physicians. In addition, the community-based hospital increased
efficiencies and accuracies of its medication administration process
with the deployment of AcuDose-Rx®
medication
dispensing cabinets. We needed a more sophisticated IT system
to remain competitive in the eyes of our physicians, nurses and
patients, said Joe Freudenberger, chief executive
officer at OakBend Medical Center. Our doctors now have
faster, easier access to complete patient information, with no
need for paper charts, and our staff of 300 nurses spends less
time tracking down information and more time caring for patients.

HIMSS
Honors Horizon Clinicals Hospitals for Outstanding EMR Adoption
HIMSS Analytics has created an EMR
Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) to track
and identify electronic medical record (EMR) capabilities ranging
from limited ancillary clinical systems through a paperless EMR
environment. The EMRAM scores hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics
Database on progress in completing the eight stages to creating
a paperless patient record environment. After reviewing more than
5,200 hospitals in the United States, HIMSS recognized only 1.6%
as achieving Stage Six EMR adoption status, classified as being
almost completely paperless through extensive use of EMRs.
McKesson congratulates the following Horizon Clinicals organizations

Spectra
Laboratories Improves Efficiency with Horizon Lab LIS
Challenges in hiring and labor costs are causing healthcare organizations
to take a serious look at the efficiency of their laboratory information
systems. Spectra Laboratories East in Rockleigh, N.J.,
recently replaced its legacy system with McKessons Horizon
Lab integrated laboratory
information system (LIS) to improve efficiency for
the more than 30 million tests it performs annually. In
light of the increasing labor cost coupled with a shortage of
new hires, we needed to automate processes with a laboratory information
system that is fast and efficient, reports Chinu Jani,
vice president of operations and general manager at Spectra Laboratories
East, a lab division of Fresenius Medical Care North America.
With Horizon
Lab, we can receive laboratory orders electronically
and report real-time results, which has significantly improved
our turnaround time to clinicians. Read the press
