Top-performing Healthcare Organizations Recognized at McKesson’s Annual CPOE Competition

Peninsula Regional Medical Center, a 358-bed hospital in Salisbury, Md., recently earned top honors in McKesson’s third annual “Celebrating CPOE Success Award” competition for reducing errors related to high-risk medications. Peninsula Regional was recognized for its use of McKesson’s Horizon Expert Orders™ computerized physician order entry (CPOE) solution to support patient safety improvements across its entire organization. “The focus of our CPOE initiative has always been patient safety,” says Chris Snyder, D.O., chief medical informatics officer, Peninsula Regional. “As our CPOE adoption levels have increased, we’ve been able to make process changes and better use of information to enhance the quality of care we deliver.”

Concord Hospital (N.H.), a 230-bed regional medical center, was named an award finalist for using CPOE to help caregivers improve and standardize inpatient diabetes management. With the right information readily available to clinicians, Concord – a two-time CPOE award winner – reduced variation in care delivery that is expected to lead to better patient outcomes. An independent panel of industry experts selected the winners based on their use of CPOE to enhance clinical and financial results. Read the press release.

HIMSS Honors Horizon Clinicals Hospitals for Outstanding EMR Adoption
HIMSS Analytics has created an EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) to track and identify electronic medical record (EMR) capabilities ranging from limited ancillary clinical systems through a paperless EMR environment. The EMRAM scores hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database on progress in completing the eight stages to creating a paperless patient record environment. After reviewing more than 5,200 hospitals in the United States, HIMSS recognized only 1.6% as achieving Stage Six EMR adoption status, classified as being almost completely paperless through extensive use of EMRs.
McKesson congratulates the following Horizon Clinicals organizations on achieving Stage Six:

  • Memorial Health University Medical Center, Savannah, Ga.
  • Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md.
  • Providence-Portland Medical Center, Portland, Ore.
  • Providence-Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, Wash.
  • St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson, Miss.
  • Vanderbilt University Hospital, Nashville, Tenn.

Spectra Laboratories East in Rockleigh, N.J., recently replaced its legacy system with McKesson’s Horizon Lab™ integrated laboratory information system (LIS) to improve efficiency for the more than 30 million tests it performs annually. “In light of the increasing labor cost coupled with a shortage of new hires, we needed to automate processes with a laboratory information system that is fast and efficient,” reports Chinu Jani, vice president of operations and general manager at Spectra Laboratories East, a lab division of Fresenius Medical Care North America. “With Horizon Lab, we can receive laboratory orders electronically and report real-time results, which has significantly improved our turnaround time to clinicians.” Read the press release.
