In 2005 I joined McKesson working in a technical support role.

Currently, I'm a technical implementation engineer, helping hospitals implement our STAR hospital information system. In my role, I work remotely, often traveling to customer sites to help with implementations of the STAR application and associated hardware.

Since 1996, I've been a volunteer firefighter and EMT with my local volunteer fire and ambulance company. In late 2007, I relocated to Valley Township, Pa., and I've been volunteering upwards of 60 hours each month at the Westwood Fire Company,our county's last 100% volunteer fire company. At Westwood I'm the ambulance lieutenant, overseeing the ambulance division as well as the EMTs and attendants. This is in addition to my primary role as a firefighter and EMT.

Matthew Carr

Winning the company's 2009 Neil Harlan Award for volunteerism allowed me to direct a $5,000 grant to the Westwood Fire Company. Because the organization is completely volunteer-run, the grant will go a long way to helping us provide critical services to our response area. I've also taken advantage of the McKesson Foundation's matching gifts benefit and nonprofit Board of Directors grant benefit during my years as a McKesson employee. With all the different ways the company supports our community involvement outside of work, it makes me proud to be a McKesson employee.

I like the feeling of helping my community and giving back. It's an especially great feeling to help a complete stranger through what is likely one of the worst experiences of their life, such as having a heart attack or being in a fire. It's truly humbling knowing that this person is putting their life in your hands, and it is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.

Furthermore, my medical training and background in healthcare actually help me when I'm working with our McKesson customers. I'm able to be onsite at a hospital and already understand the day-to-day, practical implications that our products and services have.
