McKesson Diagnostics Exchange

Align labs, clinicians and payers to help make better decisions with McKesson Diagnostics Exchange

Today, about 3,000 molecular diagnostic (MDx) tests are marketed for clinical use, and new diagnostics are regularly emerging at a rate of several per month.1   As the fastest growing sector of clinical pathology lab testing, the MDx market is set to reach $7.8 billion in 2013, according to a 2013 G2 report.2

MDx tests are often difficult to identify because there is no system of identification, and few tests have been evaluated to determine their clinical utility.  The many variations available for a single test can create confusion, collaboration challenges and inefficiencies across the healthcare system. As a result, providers, payers, manufacturers, and laboratories are hindered in making the best clinical and financial decisions — it is challenging to effectively collect, track and analyze data on the impact of each test.  Additionally, payers must have each MDx test identified uniquely in order to provide efficient reimbursement, make transparent coverage decisions, improve utilization management, and introduce new models of care support.

To address these identification and policy determination issues, we created the McKesson Diagnostics Exchange™ to provide a shared workflow solution that not only laboratories and manufacturers can use to submit information about their specific MDx tests, but also that providers and payers can use to understand and evaluate those tests.

The McKesson Diagnostics Exchange is an open, online test registry and marketplace for information and evidence about MDx tests. Through this program, organizations can register their MDx tests and obtain a unique five-digit alphanumeric McKesson Z-Code™ Identifier for every test to help users  accurately track, measure, and reimburse.  The McKesson Diagnostics Exchange includes:

  • Reference information about tests and how they are performed
  • InterQual Molecular Diagnostics clinical evidence summaries about test families

When combined into the McKesson Diagnostics Exchange workflow, this information allows payers, laboratories, and providers to identify and evaluate tests, as well as determine coverage policies. The McKesson Diagnostics Exchange helps reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve the quality of care.
